PeyruisPeyruis is located in the heart of Haute Provence, at the borders of Lubéron and Verdon, and not very far away from the Napoleon Road, halfway from Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur and Rhône Alpes. This centre of economic development is the direct heir of the route of the Italy-Spain Roman way, the Domitian way postsigned with oratories leading to Saint James of Compostela.
This territory may have been occupied during the prehistoric period but the "Cavares" of the Ligurian period are the real ancestors of the Peyruisien people. The origins of Peyruis date back from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The name "Peyruis" would come from Petronius-Ruit because of a battle during which a Roman consul would have been killed.
The castle of Peyruis, built during the first part of the Renaissance period is reduced to sections of walls covered by ivy. While strolling the streets and alleys of the old village, you can admire vestiges of manor houses built towards the end of the 15th century, with mullion windows, ornated portals and the former Town Hall with its cornices that have the appearance of lace. St Nicolas' parish church (the patron saint of the parish is Saint Roch) is very old since the main nave which is supported by eight massive pillars was built on the site of a temple. The christmas crib figures made in 1862 are remarkable. Many crosses and oratories mark out the procession ways of yesteryear.
Peyruis is proud of its 6 fountains which pour fresh water all year long, that is why Peyruis is called "the country of fountains". |
