Château-Arnoux / St Auban

Chateau-Arnoux / Saint Auban

Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is located on the right bank of the Durance river, upstream from confluence with the Bléone river.

In the Middle Ages, the village set up in the Villevieille site, next to Saint-Jean hillside. Then, in the 15th and 16th centuries, the "old village" began to develop near the castle.
Later, in the 20th century, the history of Château-Arnoux was marked by the development of the industrial site of Saint-Auban ATOFINA.

Nowadays Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is the third most important city in the department with 5,000 inhabitants.

Every Sunday morning, a important traditional market takes place in Saint-Auban.

In Saint-Auban you can also find a weather forecast centre, an aerodrome and a high-level glider flight centre.

You can go for a quiet walk on the edge of the lake. Important ornithological site.

We recommend you to discover the village misteries, the wonderful castle built by Pierre de Glandevès between 1510 and 1530, its spiral staircase, the adjacent garden which is a haven of peacefulness leading to the Font-Robert Farm (former castle farm of the 16th century).

Saint-Jean's Chapel (1667-1668) is located at an altitude of 665 metres. You can visit this area on foot by taking a signposted footpath or by car by taking a tarred road.
